An introduction to supporting LGBTQI+ children and young people

This resource belongs to the resource hub for classroom and wellbeing support.

This guidance offers an in-depth introduction to the experiences of LGBTQI+ children and young people, and how professionals can support them.

It was created using the views of LGBTQI+ children and young people who told Stonewall what would make their life at their school, college or setting better, and what they would like education staff to know.

The resource is split into 12 top tips, which include:

  • The experiences of LGBTQI+ children and young people
  • creating an inclusive environment
  • working with parents and carers

The resource builds a thorough understanding of how the LGBTQI+ community’s mental health can be affected in various different ways, and provides evidence and strategies to promote positive wellbeing and acceptance from the wider community.
