Rational emotive behaviour therapy (REBT)

REBT targeted support programmes emphasise the link between thoughts, emotions, and behaviours.

Rational emotive behaviour therapy (REBT) aims to challenge irrational and biased perceptions of reality and replace them with rational, adaptive alternatives to reduce distress in an individual.

The basis of REBT is the idea that thoughts, feelings and behaviour are interrelated and therefore, a change in irrational thoughts can change feelings and behaviours.

REBT targeted support programmes aim to teach students how to identify, challenge, and replace their irrational beliefs with healthier, rational alternatives. These programmes emphasise understanding the link between thoughts, emotions, and behaviours, and offer tools to manage negative reactions to stressors.

You can also find out more about REBT from the Association for Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy – the leading REBT professional body in the UK.

There may be other REBT services and programmes available in your local area. Contact your local authority to find out what is available to your school or college.

If you are unsure who to contact at your local authority, try speaking to your Mental Health Support Team (if applicable), your trust leadership team, or your setting’s safeguarding or pastoral lead.

If you haven’t yet reviewed the targeted support guide, this will help you to consider which types of targeted support might be appropriate for your setting.
