A practical framework to help school staff reflect on their approach to working with parents and carers and identify opportunities to strengthen participation across their setting.
Last reviewed: 08 September 2026
About this resource
This framework from Parent-Friendly Schools supports school staff to reflect on how they work with parents and carers and consider where relationships and participation could be strengthened.
It is organised around five areas: ethos and behaviours, two-way communication, home-based learning, involvement in school life and community partnerships. Across these areas, the framework explores approaches such as creating inclusive communication, responding to parent feedback, reducing barriers to involvement and developing links with community organisations.
Mental health leads can use the framework as a starting point for reviewing current practice with colleagues. It may also support discussion about the barriers that can affect parent and carer participation and where changes could help build stronger partnerships.
