E-learning module: Introduction to self-harm in schools
A free, 30-minute training module designed to help education staff understand, recognise, and respond to self-harm in a supportive and confident way.

Recognising self-harm and knowing how to respond can help staff provide the right support, ensuring students feel heard, valued and safe. This e-learning module gives staff the knowledge and confidence to identify self-harm behaviours and respond in a way that encourages students to seek help.
Co-produced by academic psychologists, school staff and mental health professionals, this training provides practical guidance to help staff feel more prepared to support students who may be self-harming.
Through practical examples and guided reflection, this module helps staff to:
- understand what self-harm is and why young people might engage in it
- recognise signs that a student may be struggling
- feel more confident in having supportive conversations with students
- respond in a way that helps students access further support.
This self-paced course takes around 30 minutes to complete.
