Supporting bereavement situations for children
A free e-learning course to help education staff support students experiencing bereavement.
This 45-minute long e-learning course looks at bereavement and grief in a school or college setting. It seeks to provide education staff with strategies, solutions and practical approaches to supporting students and their families.
The course offers guidance on how staff can influence the school culture to help build a community which supports its students.
It explains what is meant by bereavement and grief, as well as how it can affect children and young people. There is also an emphasis on the importance of having a bereavement policy.
There is some wider context provided with important facts and figures around grief and bereavement.
This e-learning course is CPD accredited and delivered by an independent NSPCC accredited safeguarding consultant. Users will be emailed their certificate upon completion.

This resource is designed for:
- use by mental health leads working with students aged 5 to 19+.
Learning outcomes
This resource addresses the following learning outcomes:
- Develop strategies to engage parents, families, carers, virtual school heads and the local community in promoting a culture of wellbeing within and outside school hours.
- Develop positive relationships and work jointly with parents, families and carers from a range of backgrounds.
- Support or signpost relevant evidence-based resources for parents, families and carers so they can develop skills and strategies to support both their child and themselves.
