This guide helps leaders and managers in FE settings to understand the importance of preparing staff for difficult disclosures. It explores how leaders and managers can guide staff to respond in ways that safeguard the learner, while also helping them manage the emotional demands of their role.  

The resource also highlights the impact of hearing difficult experiences and provides practical advice and signposting to promote staff wellbeing.

  • mental health leads supporting staff wellbeing in FE settings. 

Learning outcomes

  • Access and utilise tools, strategies and resources to support their own mental health so that they can look after themselves. 

  • Identify and utilise tools, strategies and resources to confidently engage staff to help promote and support their mental health and wellbeing. 

  • Share simple evidence-based strategies and exercises with staff and pupils/students to help them manage their mental health and develop their own coping strategies. 

  • Signpost and increase and promote awareness of resources to support staff.
